Reporter’s Notebook: Ukrainian Refugee Crisis

This is a landing page for all of the stories we filed from Warsaw, Krakow, and the Ukrainian border in April and May of 2022.

We went to focus on the good work Arizona volunteers are doing to help refugees fleeing Ukraine with nothing.

I’m grateful that my bosses agreed to send me, along with photojournalist Mike Williams, to spend four days on the ground in Poland.

I spent weeks setting up meetings with Arizona volunteers, but didn’t know if we could work out the logistics until we got there. They’re working across Poland and Ukraine, spread out over hundreds of miles. I would’ve been happy to link up with just a couple of the people I’d been talking to before the trip, but the stars aligned and we were able to work out our schedules to meet almost all of them!
